McKee Cliffside Caves

What to do on a not-so-nice-weather day? This network of trails, shared by hikers and mountain-bikers alike, is nestled in the eastern suburbs of Abbotsford. It makes for a nice retreat where you can pick and choose how far you want to go. This day I hiked for 2.5 hours (moving time). Thanks to my All Trails app, I did not get lost.

I drove east off of Whatcom Rd, onto Westview Rd. and then right onto Treetop Rd. where I parked at the dead end. Turning right on the Federau trail, I stayed on the perimeter of the park, which soon met up with a creek. There the trail dropped down, following the creek.

Odd formations in the sand-stone cliffs hugged by the trail with its numerous board-walks. Stayed right on the Hidden Valley trail which ran parallel to Lower Sumas Mt. Rd. and along the 1/2 km of cliffs. A wooden mountain-biker sign that reads: Old Daddy is at the beginning of the caves section.

At the end of the wall I bushwhacked on a faint trail to the Xcellerator trail. This cut off a large loop for me.

A steep but short climb, staying left at the next junction and hiking up the Mixed Bag trail to McKee Peak. By now the weather was completely socked in, therefore no views of Sumas Prairie. From the peak I took the Da Plow old FSR / trail back to my vehicle.

This owl flew right by me and landed close-by, keeping an eye on me.
