Fat Dog Snowshoe

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

Fat Dog is a little ways past Allison Pass on Hwy. 3 in Manning Park.

Stats: 16.3 km / 732 cum. gain / 1955m high / 4:40 hours MT

Kelly Mt. is to the right, following that ridge to Norheim Mt. The 2nd, 3rd & 4rth Bros. are that ridge in the upper right of this pic. Nicomen Peak + Skaist & Kettle Peaks could be seen from the ridge to the far NW.

pic 1) John taking advantage of the warm sun after snowshoeing almost an hour in the shadow of the mountain in pic 2) (slider). It was -12C but by the time we were on the ridge it was only -2C.

Pic 2) We arrive at the landing which is one of the few spots where the group plateaus. Up till then it was a nice gradual grade (for the most part) but after the landing it gets steeper, soon bringing us into the alpines.

Getting those gorgeous views - SW

SW to west to NW

Almost on top of the ridge, to our destination.

Close to the Three Bros. Mts. - NE

East - This ridge right beside us, gets you to the Bros.

Careful on those cornices!

Nine of us at the viewpoint, 3 decided to have lunch a little lower. No wind made for perfect conditions. We stayed up there for a good hour.

Gary B, John Mc, Christine C & Tammy W decided to take a different route down to the landing, going straight down the slope and then across. Since there was no view that way, I opted to stay on the trail.

The mighty Hozameens.

west

Almost back in the forest.

Group shot back at the landing: John Mc, Tammy W, Gary B, Christine C, Sue A, Don T, Janice H, Lori Y, Robbin Y, me, Terry B + Irene H

1) John liked knocking the "snow heads" off. 2) Cinnamon buns. 3) A snail.

That's why I stayed ahead of John here, so I could get a pic of the snow heads before he got to them. We were out from 9:30am to 4:00pm. Time well spent.
