Elk on Ice

A steep local trail: 10 km / 750m gain / 1420m high

I thought I'd get out and hike on such a lovely day. Maybe Elk Mt. wasn't such a good idea. I'd never seen the parking lot so full. Cars were parked way down the road on both ends. I must've added an extra 1/4 km onto the hike because I kept climbing off of the trail to do my 2m of social distancing due to the Covid-19 virus.

pic 2) Halfway up I had to put on my micro-spikes. The trail was coated in ice.

1.45 hours later at the first viewpoint overlooking Sumas Prairie. It was only another 20 minutes to get to the summit.

View east from the summit.

pic 1) Slesse 2) American & Canadian Border Peaks 3) Tomyhoii 4) McGuire 5) Mt. Baker

Thurston Mt. to the left. I was post-holing on the trail beyond this point so I turned back.

From east to south

Southwest -- looking at Chilliwack River Valley & Cultus Lake.

Heading back down. Sumas Mt. & Sumas Prairie.

Northwest to north -- prominent peaks to the left are Golden Ears & Robie Reid.

Back at the first viewpoint.

pic 1) This section just below the first viewpoint is very steep. 2) you can see how steep the slope is 3) This was the only creek near the bottom so take enough water along!

I took this pic after leaving the parking lot, turning the corner and then turning left onto a gravel road. The peaks are Cheam, Lady, Baby Mundy, Stewart and Slesse to the right.

With My Two Feet.
