Elk Mt.

January 10, 2023 - Chilliwack

Stats: 10.7 km / 924m gain / 1466m high / 4:20 hours MT

Our local Elk Mt. gave us many glorious vistas this day. Micro-spikes were a must. We needed to use them at & above 1080m. Sometimes the ice was so smooth and thick and on such a steep slope, we had to kick into it to get a secure foothold.

Morning mist.

The stairs just before the viewpoint were especially slippery. Sometimes getting off of the path was the better way to go.

At the viewpoint overlooking Cultus Lake, Vedder Mt, Sumas Prairie, Sumas Mt & the Fraser River.

Southwest to northwest.

North.

On the northern horizon the prominant peaks of Robbie Reid & Judge Howay stood out.

The Chilliwack River Valley to the left.

The Border Peaks.

Ground covers on a wind-swept slope, peaking through the thin layer of snow -- southeast to south.

Tomyhoi and McGuire.

Mt. Baker.

From left to right: Mt. Slesse (2070m), Canadian & American Border Peaks (2040 & 2256m), Tomyhoi tucked in behind (2073m), Mt. McGuire (1860m) and Mt. Baker (3300m).

The almost buried bench.

A nice sheltered spot on the ridge to pitch a tent.

Looking back before starting the descent.

Vedder & Sumas Mtns.

Careful steps.

Even carefuller steps. I'd prefer snow to ice any day.

Almost back. The outhouse had lots of toilet paper!

We drove just a bit up this side road, round the corner from the parking lot, to get this photo.
